Professor Anthony Dart is a clinician specialising in lipid disorders and a prominent researcher in cardiovascular medicine at Monash University, holding an appointment in the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine, Faculty of Medicine Alfred Hospital, Central Clinical School. He earned his BA in Physiology, DPhil in Neurophysiology, and BM BCh from the University of Oxford. His training included internships in Oxford and Bath, basic physician training in South Wales at Morriston Hospital Swansea, Llandough, Royal Infirmary, and Heath Hospital Cardiff, cardiology registrar at Heath Hospital University of Wales, senior registrar in Aberdeen at Forresterhill Hospital and Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, and Lecturer in the Cardiovascular Research Unit at the University of Edinburgh. As a Royal Society European Exchange Fellow, he spent two years in the Department of Cardiology at Heidelberg, Germany. In 1988, he relocated to Melbourne to join the Baker Medical Research Institute, later serving as Acting Director (2002-2004) and Director (2004-2017) of the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine at The Alfred Hospital. He is Co-Head of the Experimental Cardiology Laboratory at Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute and Senior Principal Research Fellow with the NHMRC, as well as FRACP and FRCP.
Dart's clinical interests include hyperlipidaemia and control of cardiac risk factors. His research specializations encompass hyperlipidaemia and vascular function related to myocardial ischaemia and hypertension, with major laboratory focus on myocardial ischaemia and infarction. Additional interests involve sites of atheroma and instability, haemodynamics and tissue deformity, cardiac and vascular tissue characterisation via MRI, biomarkers such as Macrophage Migration Inhibitory Factor and lipidomics for coronary artery disease propensity, and heart failure with preserved ejection fraction. He has authored more than 300 publications related to cardiac disease and served as chief investigator on three NHMRC program and CRE grants. His contributions have advanced understanding of cardiovascular pathophysiology and therapeutic targets, supported by funding from the British Heart Foundation, National Heart Foundation of Australia, and Medical Research Council UK. Access to clinical cohorts, advanced imaging, and invasive investigations underpins his translational research impact.
