About Anthony

Dr. Anthony Heynen is an Associate Professor and Senior Lecturer in the School of Chemical Engineering at the University of Queensland, where he serves as Program Coordinator for the Sustainable Energy postgraduate program. This role involves developing curricula and courses such as Energy & Development and Energy Investment & Finance to train leaders in the transition to equitable, reliable, and affordable clean energy. Heynen holds a PhD (2017) from the University of Queensland on private sector electrification in base-of-the-pyramid marketplaces in India, a Master of Engineering (coursework) from the University of Melbourne, a Master of Business Administration from the National University of Singapore, a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours), and a Postgraduate Diploma from the University of Queensland. As a Chartered Professional Engineer, he brings extensive management experience from the resources and consulting sectors, including his position as Country Manager for the Italian energy company Eni in Timor-Leste, enhancing his expertise in stakeholder engagement and leadership.

Heynen's research intersects energy and sustainability, focusing on energy access solutions for remote and base-of-the-pyramid communities in Timor-Leste, Papua New Guinea, and India, particularly social enterprise business models; strategies for Net Zero emissions and sustainable legacies for mega-events like the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games; and innovations in postgraduate teaching centered on sustainability leadership pedagogy. His key publications include the highly cited 'Pay-As-You-Go financing: a model for viable and widespread deployment of solar home systems in rural India' (Energy for Sustainable Development, 2019, 107 citations), 'Off-grid opportunities and threats in the wake of India’s electrification push' (Energy, Sustainability and Society, 2019, 54 citations), 'The role of private sector off-grid actors in addressing India's energy poverty' (Energy and Buildings, 2019, 34 citations), 'Sustainable legacies of a climate positive Olympic games: an assessment of carbon offsets and renewable energy for Brisbane 2032' (Sustainability, 2023), and 'Electrification in post-conflict Timor-Leste: opportunities for energy services to enhance rural agricultural development' (Energy Research & Social Science, 2024). He has earned several awards for teaching innovations in sustainability leadership. Heynen contributes to public discourse through articles in The Conversation on Olympic sustainability and energy challenges in the Pacific.
