Professor Anubhav Mittal is a hepatopancreatobiliary surgeon and Clinical Associate Professor in the Faculty of Medicine and Health at the University of Sydney's Northern Clinical School. He earned his Bachelor of Human Biology (BHB) and Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) from the University of Auckland Medical School. Mittal completed general surgical training through the Sydney Training Program and specialized hepatopancreatobiliary training at Royal North Shore Hospital. He obtained his PhD from the University of Sydney for research on biomarkers in pancreatic cancer and holds Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS). His academic career also includes an Adjunct Professor of Surgery position at the University of Notre Dame Australia, where he serves as Head of Discipline of Surgery at the Mater Clinical School.
Mittal directs the Minimally Invasive Surgery Unit at Royal North Shore Hospital, heads Gastrointestinal Surgery at Mater Hospital, and practices robotic and laparoscopic surgery at Royal North Shore Hospital, North Shore Private Hospital, Mater Hospital, and Ryde Hospital using the da Vinci XI system. He is a founding member of the Australian Pancreatic Centre at Royal North Shore Hospital and Surgical Lead for the NSQIP quality improvement program. His research interests center on pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer, particularly biomarkers for early detection and prognosis, as evidenced by publications such as 'Serum Biomarker Panel for Diagnosis and Prognosis of Pancreatic Cancer' (Frontiers in Oncology, 2021) and 'Tissue biomarker panel as a surrogate marker for squamous differentiation in upper tract urothelial carcinoma' (European Journal of Surgical Oncology, 2020). Mittal received the Sir Edward Hughes Memorial Clinical Research Prize in Surgery (2008), Best Paper Prize from the Australian and New Zealand Hepatic, Pancreatic and Biliary Association (2008), Young Investigator Awards from the Surgical Research Society of Australasia (2007 and 2008), and Sir Louis Barnett Prize from the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (2008). He reviews for journals including the British Journal of Surgery, BMC Gastroenterology, and the Journal of Surgical Research, and speaks regularly at international pancreatic research meetings.
