As a feminist family scholar, Dr. Few-Demo's research investigates how marginalized individuals and families experience social disparities and inequities, focusing on strengths-based examinations of relational and situational vulnerabilities and resiliencies related to agency and power in identity development, intimate partner violence, sexuality, and decision-making. She has advanced the application of critical theories such as Black feminist theory, intersectionality, queer theory, and critical race theories in family science. Key publications include her co-edited books, Handbook of Feminist Family Studies (Sage, 2009) and Sourcebook of Family Theories and Methodologies: A Dynamic Approach (Springer, 2022). Notable articles are 'Intersectionality as the “new” critical approach in feminist family studies: Evolving racial/ethnic feminisms and critical race theories' (Journal of Family Theory & Review, 2014), which earned the 2017 Sussman Award for Scholarly Contributions to Family Science; and 'Queer theory, intersectionality, and LGBT-parent families: Stretching and challenging family theories' (Journal of Family Theory & Review, 2016), recipient of the 2017 Alexis Walker Award (Wiley Prize in Family Science). Other significant works include 'Gender, feminist, and intersectional perspectives on families: A decade in review' (Journal of Marriage and Family, 2020) and 'Emotional worlds colliding: A qualitative exploration of the emotional experiences of transgender and cisgender women in relationships during transition' (Journal of Marital and Family Therapy, 2023). Dr. Few-Demo has served on editorial boards of premier journals including Journal of Marriage and Family, Journal of Family Theory and Review, Journal of Family Issues, Family Relations, and Journal of Family Communication. Her leadership includes election to offices in the National Council on Family Relations, where she was named a Fellow in recognition of outstanding contributions to family science—one of only nine Black women since 1998. Additional honors encompass the Human Development and Family Science Alumni Award from UGA (2014-2015) and the Jessie Bernard Outstanding Contribution to Feminist Scholarship Paper Award (2004).
