About Arran

Dr Arran Reader is a Lecturer in Psychology at the University of Stirling. He received his PhD in Neuroscience from the University of Reading in 2018. He then spent two and a half years as a postdoctoral researcher at the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden, before joining the University of Stirling in July 2020.

Dr Reader’s research focuses on movement and bodily self-perception in individual and social contexts. He investigates topics such as imitation, strategies for handling multiple objects with a single hand, and the links between body perception and motor control, often employing methods including motion-tracking, non-invasive brain stimulation, and sensory illusions like the rubber hand illusion. His work has appeared in journals including Nature, Brain, Experimental Brain Research, and Journal of Neurophysiology. He serves as associate or handling editor for Cognitive Processing and Collabra: Psychology. Within the university, he holds roles as Deputy Director of Postgraduate Research in Psychology and Undergraduate Adviser of Studies in Psychology. He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a member of the British Association for Cognitive Neuroscience and the Experimental Psychology Society. He is also Co-Lead for the Accessible Environments cluster under the Institute for Advanced Studies PhD Studentship scheme.
