Professor Arri Coomarasamy is Professor of Gynaecology and Reproductive Medicine in the Department of Metabolism and Systems Science at the University of Birmingham. He serves as Director of Tommy’s National Centre for Miscarriage Research, leading specialist teams across multiple institutions to advance understanding and prevention of early pregnancy loss. He received his undergraduate medical education, including an MBChB degree, from the University of Birmingham in 1995 and holds additional qualifications of MD, FRCOG and FMedSci. His research focuses on miscarriage prevention, including major clinical trials such as PROMISE and PRISM on progesterone use, as well as postpartum haemorrhage management through initiatives like the E-MOTIVE trial and global women’s health. He has published more than 300 peer-reviewed articles in leading journals including the New England Journal of Medicine, The Lancet and the British Medical Journal. In 2023 he was awarded an OBE by His Majesty the King in recognition of his contributions to maternal health and obstetric research. He also holds roles as Honorary Consultant Gynaecologist and Founding Director of the WHO Collaborating Centre for Global Women’s Health, and serves on national and international committees to improve pregnancy safety.
