Arseny Gorbenko is a Lecturer in the Department of Banking and Finance at Monash Business School, Monash University, located in Caulfield, Australia. He received his PhD in Finance from the University of New South Wales in 2020, MS in Finance from Lappeenranta University of Technology in Finland, and BMgmt in Financial Management from St. Petersburg State University in Russia. Gorbenko's research investigates the role of sophisticated market participants, including investment managers and short sellers, in financial markets. His research interests encompass empirical asset pricing, investment management, short selling, market microstructure, and international finance. He teaches units such as BFX4005 Empirical Asset Pricing and Investments and BFC3241 Equities and Investment Analysis.
Gorbenko has published several papers in top finance journals. His solo-authored article 'Short Interest and Aggregate Stock Returns: International Evidence' was published in the Review of Asset Pricing Studies in 2023 and received the 2024 Rising Scholar Award from the journal. Another solo-authored paper, 'Short Selling Around News in International Stock Markets,' is accepted and forthcoming in the Review of Asset Pricing Studies in 2026. He co-authored 'Nonstandard Errors' with over 300 researchers, published in the Journal of Finance in 2024, which examines nonstandard errors arising from variation in evidence-generating processes across researchers. His current working papers include 'Ownership Structure and Short Selling Around the World' with Lucie Lu, 'Short Interest in Bonds and Aggregate Stock Returns' with Huu Nhan Duong, Petko Kalev, and Xiao Tian, and 'Scale and Price Efficiency' with Oleg Chuprinin and Chang-Mo Kang, which received the Amery Partners Best Paper Award at the 2019 BFCM Conference. Gorbenko has presented his research at conferences including the 2025 Asian Finance Association Annual Meeting, 2025 Financial Management Association Annual Meeting, 2025 IRMC, 2025 Monash Q Group Colloquium, and 2025 VICIF, as well as seminars at Monash University, RMIT, Swinburne University of Technology, and University of Melbourne.
