About Arthur

Arthur Butz serves as Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Northwestern University's McCormick School of Engineering. With a strong foundation in electrical engineering and computer science, he has been a faculty member since the late 1960s. Butz obtained his B.S., M.S., and E.E. degrees in Electrical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge, MA, followed by a Ph.D. in Control Sciences from the University of Minnesota in St. Paul, MN, in 1965. He joined Northwestern University, advancing to Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering in 1969. Additionally, he held a summer position as Member of the Technical Staff at Bell Telephone Laboratories in 1969.

Butz's research interests center on digital signal processing, with a recent return to his earlier work on space-filling curves, which have diverse applications in computer science and engineering. His contributions to the field are evidenced by numerous publications in prestigious journals. Notable works include "Alternative Algorithm for Hilbert's Space-Filling Curve" published in IEEE Transactions on Computers in 1971, which has garnered 429 citations; "Convergence with Hilbert's Space Filling Curve" in the Journal of Computer and System Sciences in 1969 (194 citations); "Space Filling Curves and Mathematical Programming" in Information and Control in 1968 (169 citations); "Regular Sets and Rank Order Processors" in IEEE Transactions on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing in 1990; and "Systolic Computation of the Running Min and Max" in Electronics Letters in 1993. His scholarly output has accumulated over 1,200 citations, reflecting his impact in areas such as signal processing and computational algorithms.

In addition to research, Butz teaches key courses in the department, including ELEC_ENG 363: Digital Filtering, ELEC_ENG 418: Advanced Digital Signal Processing, and contributions to signals and systems education. His work bridges theoretical advancements with practical applications in electrical engineering and computer science at Northwestern University.
