Dr. Arup Poddar is a Professor of Law at the West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences (WBNUJS), Kolkata, where he heads the School of Technology Law and Development. He earned his PhD in Law from the University of North Bengal in 2007, LLM with specialization in International Environmental Law, LLB focusing on Agricultural Law, Environmental Law, and Water Law, and B.Sc. Appointed Professor effective 26 June 2013, he previously served as Acting Registrar at WBNUJS during 2010-11 and has held numerous administrative roles including permanent member of the Academic Council, Chairperson of the Undergraduate Council, and member of committees such as Admission, Building, Hostel, IQAC, and Moderation. Externally, he is a member of Boards of Studies at Amity University, Sikkim Central University, and JIS University, and was a member of the Academic Council at Maharashtra National Law University Mumbai during 2015-16. He serves as PhD thesis examiner for universities like University of North Bengal, Banaras Hindu University, and Sikkim Central University, and currently guides several PhD candidates.
Prof. Poddar's research and teaching focus on International Environmental Law, encompassing subjects like Environmental Law, Water Law, and Agricultural Law for LLB and LLM programs. He contributed to the Planning Commission's draft model bill for groundwater resources protection in 2011 and was Principal Investigator for the WB Judicial Academy project on Urbanization and Environment Protection (2014-2017). He has authored five books and edited three, and published articles such as “Adoption of Polluter Pays Principle by the Indian Supreme Court for Delivery of Environmental Justice” (GNLU Student Law Review, 2020), “A Tale Of Forest Conservation From Nature Lovers Movement Case” (Imperial Journal of Interdisciplinary Research, 2017), and “Climate Change and Migration: Developing Policies to Address the Growing Challenge of Climate-Induced Displacement” (International Journal of Climate Change: Impacts & Responses, 2024). As founder and Chief Editor, he established the International Journal of Law and Policy Review (2012) and International Journal of Legal Studies and Research (2012). Prof. Poddar has chaired technical sessions at national seminars on global warming, biodiversity, and mining law, and received the Bharat Jyoti Award in 2019 from the India International Friendship Society.
