Asad A. Abidi serves as the Distinguished Chancellor’s Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering within the Engineering faculty at the University of California, Los Angeles. He received his B.Sc. degree with honors in electrical engineering from Imperial College London in 1976, an M.S. in 1978, and a Ph.D. in 1981 from the University of California, Berkeley. Following his doctoral studies, Abidi worked as an electrical engineer at Bell Laboratories from 1981 to 1984 before joining UCLA in January 1985 as a tenured Associate Professor. Over his nearly four decades at UCLA, he has held various leadership roles and advanced to his current distinguished professorship.
Abidi's academic interests center on analog and RF integrated circuit design and the design-oriented theory of circuits, particularly in the primary area of Circuits and Embedded Systems. His pioneering work in RF CMOS technology has revolutionized wireless communications by enabling fully integrated radio transceivers in standard CMOS processes, impacting mobile phones and wireless networking devices worldwide. Notable publications include the seminal paper "Direct-Conversion Radio Transceivers for Digital Communications" published in the IEEE Journal of Solid-State Circuits in 1995, and "A Blocker-Tolerant Wideband Noise-Cancelling Receiver with a 2dB Noise Figure" in 2012, which received both the IEEE Journal of Solid-State Circuits Best Paper Award and the ISSCC Distinguished Technical Paper Award. Abidi has garnered prestigious honors such as election to the National Academy of Engineering in 2007 for his work on MOS integrated circuits for RF communications, the 2008 IEEE Donald O. Pederson Award for pioneering RF-CMOS contributions, election as an IEEE Fellow in 1996, the 2013 ISSCC Outstanding Contributor Award, and the 2009 fellowship in The World Academy of Sciences. He has also earned teaching accolades including the 2007 Lockheed-Martin Award for Excellence in Teaching from UCLA Engineering. His scholarly impact is evident in his extensive publication record and high citation metrics.
