Dr. Ashfaq Ahmad Khan serves as Senior Lecturer in Financial Accounting and Management Accounting at the UNE Business School, University of New England, Australia, a position he has held since joining the institution in January 2010. His academic qualifications include a PhD in Accounting from the University of Wollongong’s School of Accounting and Finance, completed in 2008; a Master in Business Administration with a major in Accounting and Finance from the University of Peshawar, Pakistan, where he achieved second position in order of merit; and a Bachelor in Business Administration with a major in Accounting and Finance from the same university, awarded with High Distinction and a Gold Medal. Khan is a Certified Practising Accountant (CPA Australia) and holds a Graduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning (GCTE) from UNE. Prior to UNE, he was Assistant Professor in Accounting at the University of Nizwa, Oman. He also worked as a part-time teaching academic at the University of Wollongong and MIT Sydney from March 2004 to August 2008. Earlier, from March 1995 to February 2003, he gained practical experience as a commercial banker in Pakistan, including roles at The Bank of Khyber handling audit, international banking, and foreign trade operations, and at Bank Al-Habib Limited managing credits, foreign currency accounts, and foreign trade.
Khan’s research interests encompass SMEs and microfinance, poverty and poverty alleviation strategies, tertiary teaching and learning, management accounting, auditing, institutional theory and organizational change dynamics, small businesses and microfinance, accounting and management accounting, as well as commercial, investment, and Islamic banking. He has an extensive publication record, including “Islamic Banking’s Decades-Long Institutionalisation Struggle – The Case of Pakistan” in the Australasian Accounting Business and Finance Journal (2024); “‘Self-Sustainability’ and ‘Performance’ in Microfinance – The Contextual Relevance of the Terms” in the Australasian Accounting, Business and Finance Journal (2024); “Does Intellectual Capital in Islamic Banks outperform Conventional Banks? Evidence from GCC Countries” in the Asian Review of Accounting (2023); and “Management’s internal governance policies on flexible work practices and the mediating lens of work life enrichment” in the Journal of Organizational Effectiveness: People and Performance (2023). Additional key works include “The 'Interactive' Performance Measurement System and Team Performance - Towards Optimal Organizational Utility” in the International Journal of Productivity and Performance Management (2021) and book chapters such as “Curriculum design for developing capacity to deal with complex issues: Theoretical perspectives” (2013). His achievements include the University Gold Medal for BBA, Second Position in MBA from the University of Peshawar, and the Best Article Award at the 4th International Conference on Human Resource Management (2023).
