About Ashley

Ashley Paine is a Senior Lecturer in Architecture and Co-Director of the ATCH Research Centre (Architecture Theory Culture History) in the School of Architecture, Design and Planning at the University of Queensland. He earned his Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Queensland in 2015, with a thesis titled "The history and artifice of horizontally striped architecture: A study of articulation, composition and the work of Mario Botta." Prior degrees include a Master's (Coursework) and Bachelor (Honours) from Queensland University of Technology. Paine's research focuses on architectural history, the intersections between art and architecture, historic preservation, and adaptive re-use, with current emphasis on the collection, preservation, and reconstruction of buildings in museums, particularly the works of Frank Lloyd Wright.

Paine has made significant contributions through his editorial and authorial roles in scholarly publishing. He served as lead editor for Valuing Architecture: Heritage and the Economics of Culture (2020, Valiz), co-editor for Trading between Architecture and Art: Strategies and Practices of Exchange (2019, Valiz), and co-author of Pavilion Propositions: Nine Points on an Architectural Phenomenon (2018, Valiz). His journal articles include "Buildings-in-buildings: museological theatres of preservation and display" (2023, arq: Architectural Research Quarterly), "Staging Frank Lloyd Wright’s Imperial Hotel" (2022, Theatre and Performance Design), "Gold Creek by Steendijk and Glenn Murcutt" (2025, Houses), "Profile: Speculative Architecture" (2024, Architecture Australia), "Tactics of reconstructing the past: recent residential practice" (2021, Architecture Australia), "Frank Lloyd Wright's posthumous architecture" (2018, Architectural Research Quarterly), and "Not quite Wright: re-performing Frank Lloyd Wright's architecture ex situ" (2018, Future Anterior). Book chapters feature "Inside becomes outside: Queensland’s domestic landscape" (2022, The new Queensland house) and "Fugitive Architecture" (2022, The spoken object). He has presented at conferences across Australia, New Zealand, Europe, and the United States. Additionally, Paine is a practicing architect and co-founder of PHAB Architects in Brisbane, focusing on public projects, exhibition design, residential, and heritage buildings. He has received funding from ARC Discovery Projects (2016-2022) and the Queensland Government Department of Environment, Science and Innovation (2024-2025).
