Professor Atsuko Yamaguchi serves as Professor in the Faculty of Fisheries at Nagasaki University, where she has held the position since 2010. She earned her Ph.D. in Agriculture from the University of Tokyo in 1997. Her research centers on ichthyology, with a focus on the biology, ecology, reproduction, growth, and conservation of sharks, rays, and other fish species, particularly in Ariake Bay and the northwestern Pacific region. She has led studies identifying nursery habitats for species such as the scalloped hammerhead shark and has contributed to the redescription of stingray species, including the distinction of Hemitrygon ariakensis.
Yamaguchi maintains extensive involvement in academic and policy committees, including roles with the Japanese Society of Ichthyology, the IUCN Shark Specialist Group, the Ministry of the Environment, and local Nagasaki Prefecture environmental bodies. She has received multiple awards, such as the Impact Paper Award from Nagasaki University in 2022 and 2023, the Paper Award from the Japanese Society of Ichthyology in 2020, and the Encouragement Award from the Japanese Society of Fisheries Science in 2005. Her work appears in numerous peer-reviewed publications on elasmobranch life history and fisheries science.
