Ben Varkalis is a Senior Teaching Fellow in the School of Geography, Division of Humanities, at the University of Otago. He holds a Bachelor of Applied Science (BAppSc) from the University of Otago and has served as a Teaching Fellow since 2009. In his role, Varkalis organizes and assists with the delivery of several undergraduate courses, including ENVI 111: Environment and Society, which introduces foundational concepts in environmental studies; GEOG 101: Physical Geography, covering geomorphology, climatology, hydrology, and biogeography; GEOG 102: Geographies of Sustainable Futures, exploring sustainability issues; GEOG 201: Field Research Methods, focusing on practical research skills; and GEOG 301: Field Research Studies, an advanced field-based course. He oversees all practical and tutorial components of these papers, ensuring students receive hands-on learning opportunities and direct support. As the primary point of contact for first-year Geography students, Varkalis provides essential guidance, fostering their academic success and engagement with the discipline.
Varkalis contributes significantly to enhancing teaching and learning across the University of Otago. As one of the six Kaikōkiri in the Kōkiri Ki Tua educational network, he supports coordinated efforts to highlight teaching successes, inspire discussions on pedagogical challenges, and share innovative strategies for improving the learning environment for both students and staff. His commitment to educational excellence extends to supporting Māori and Pacific Island students in the Division of Humanities and Sciences through dedicated liaison roles. Additionally, Varkalis has engaged in academic presentations, including a 2008 verbal contribution at the 28th International Association for Impact Assessment Annual Conference in Perth, Australia, titled 'Local authority guidance for impact assessment in New Zealand,' co-presented with R. Morgan. Located in the Richardson Building, room 5C12a, he is available by appointment to discuss student needs and course matters. Through his longstanding dedication to practical teaching and student support, Varkalis plays a vital role in the Geography program and university-wide educational initiatives.
