Bernhard Jenny is an Associate Professor of Immersive Visualisation in the Department of Human Centred Computing within Monash University’s Faculty of Information Technology. He holds a Doctor of Sciences in Cartography from ETH Zurich awarded on 4 March 2010, a Postgraduate Certificate in Computer Science from ETH Zurich awarded on 26 October 2005, and a Master of Science in Rural Engineering, Environmental Technologies and Surveying from EPFL awarded on 1 April 2000. Prior to his appointment at Monash University in 2017, he was Assistant Professor of Cartography and Geovisualisation at Oregon State University and Senior Lecturer at RMIT University, Melbourne. Jenny’s research focuses on the visualisation of geospatial data by combining cartography, computer graphics, immersive visualisation, and human-computer interaction. His current activities include virtual reality and augmented reality applied to geospatial data, outdoor augmented reality storytelling and immersive analytics with geospatial data, adaptive composite map projections for digital maps and virtual reality, representation of terrain in 2D and 3D, and algorithms and methods for the design of thematic maps such as flow maps and dot maps.
Jenny has received major awards including the Henry Johns Award for the Best Cartographic Journal Article in 2006 (shared with L. Hurni), 2010 (shared with H. Jenny and L. Hurni), and 2011 (shared with H. Jenny, W. E. Cartwright, and L. Hurni), the CaGIS Doctoral Scholarship Award in 2009, and the ETH Medal in 2010. Key publications encompass “Ambient Occlusion for Terrain Shading” (2024, Cartographic Perspectives), “Deimos: A grammar of dynamic embodied immersive visualisation morphs and transitions” (2023, Proceedings of the 2023 CHI Conference), “Drawing connections: Designing situated links for immersive maps” (2023, Proceedings of the ACM on Human-Computer Interaction), “Visualization placement for outdoor augmented data tours” (2023, Proceedings - SUI 2023), “Studying cartographic heritage: Analysis and visualization of geometric distortions” (2011, 234 citations), and “Color design for the color vision impaired” (2007, 178 citations). He serves as editorial board member for Cartography and Geographic Information Science (since March 2017), associate editor for Journal of Maps (since 2016), and editorial board member for International Journal of Cartography (since 2014) and Cartographic Perspectives (since 2013).
