Rate My Professor Billie Mudie

Billie Mudie is the Director of the Bachelor of Radiation Therapy Programme in the Department of Radiation Therapy at the University of Otago's Wellington campus, where she also serves as a Senior Lecturer. With qualifications including a Bachelor of Health Science (BHSc) and New Zealand Diploma in Medical Radiation Technology (NDMRT), she possesses over 30 years of clinical experience as a radiation therapist in New Zealand and the UK. In addition to her academic roles, Mudie holds a joint appointment as a radiation therapist at the Wellington Blood and Cancer Centre and teaches radiation therapy planning within the programme. She coordinates and delivers instruction in several core undergraduate courses, such as RADT121 Radiation Therapy Practice I, RADT124 Radiation Therapy Planning Concepts I, RADT215 Radiation Therapy and Oncology II, and RADT314 Radiation Therapy and Oncology III. As Director, she leads New Zealand's sole provider of undergraduate and postgraduate radiation therapy education, ensuring graduates meet high standards of patient care in this high-tech field.

Mudie's research specializations centre on clinical education and assessment in radiation therapy. Notable contributions include co-authoring the 2019 ePoster "Planning is better together in the cloud," a collaborative project on cloud-based planning tools, and presentations on the VERT virtual reality system for radiotherapy training, such as a 2013 plenary address and involvement in a 2017 narrative review on simulation-based education. She also presented at TERNZ 2017 on teamwork dynamics in radiation therapy education and delivered a 2025 oral abstract highlighting radiotherapy's role in breast cancer treatment. Beyond academia, Mudie was appointed to the Medical Radiation Technologists Board in 2015, chairing it until February 2024, and served on key committees including Professional Standards, Online Examinations, and as liaison to Te Manu Mātārae for Māori practitioner advisory.
