Dr. A. Blair Stonechild serves as Professor of Indigenous Studies at First Nations University of Canada. He joined the university in 1976 as its first faculty member and has held senior administrative roles including Dean of Academics and Executive Director of Development. Stonechild earned a BA from McGill University and both an MA and PhD from the University of Regina. His research centers on Indigenous history, Indigenous policy, Indigenous spirituality, and Indian Residential Schools, with expertise extending to North American Indigenous history, the history of Indian policy, Indigenous post-secondary education, and museum practices involving Indigenous peoples.
Stonechild is a member of the Muscowpetung First Nation. Among his major publications are Loyal till Death: Indians and the North West Rebellion (co-authored with Bill Waiser, 1997), The New Buffalo: The Struggle for Aboriginal Post-Secondary Education (2006), Buffy Sainte-Marie: It’s My Way (2012), The Knowledge Seeker: Embracing Indigenous Spirituality (2016), and Loss of Indigenous Eden and the Fall of Spirituality (2020). He has taught a wide range of courses in Indigenous studies covering topics such as international Indigenous studies, regional Indigenous histories, museums and First Peoples, Indigenous religion and philosophy, the history of Indian Residential Schools, contemporary Indigenous peoples, and issues in self-determination.
