Dr. Brandon D. Stewart is a Lecturer in the Faculty of Law at Monash University and a Fellow of the Australian Centre for Justice Innovation. He earned a BA (Honours) with Gold Medal in Criminology and Contemporary Studies from Wilfrid Laurier University (2010), a JD with Silver Medal from the University of Ottawa (2013), an LLM from Yale University (2018), and a JSD from Yale University (2020). Prior to academia, he practiced as a commercial litigator and served as a research fellow at Halton Community Legal Services from 2016 to 2022. His appointments include Visiting Professor at the University of Sydney (2024), Lecturer at the University of Technology Sydney (2023–2025), Assistant Professor at the University of Ottawa (2021–2022), Limited Term Instructor at Dalhousie University (2020–2021), Adjunct Professor at the University of Ottawa (2019–2020), and Graduate Tutor-in-Law at Yale University (2018–2019).
Stewart's research encompasses the law of torts and toxic torts, climate change law and policy, progressive private law, access to justice including community legal clinic service delivery, legal education and law student wellbeing, and empirical legal research (qualitative and quantitative). Key publications are 'Intentional noise exposure as a battery? (McGill Journal of Sustainable Development Law, 2022), 'Legal secondary consultation: expanding the reach of Ontario’s community legal clinics through community partnerships' with A. Currie (Access to Justice in the Americas, 2021), 'Business as usual? The limited influence of climate change disclosure and fiduciary duties on the low-carbon investment practices of Canada's big 10 public pension funds' (Journal of Environmental Law and Practice, 2020), and 'Shining some sunlight on mandatory corporate climate-related disclosure' (McGill Journal of Sustainable Development Law, 2020). Awards include the Fulbright Fellowship (2017), Emerging Researcher Grant (2022), Faculty of Law Teaching Award shared with Genevieve Grant (2025), and Education Innovation Small Grant (2025). He co-leads a Faculty Task and Finish Group on core LLB teaching models, acts as Generative AI Champion for teaching teams, and has given invited talks at the Annual Torts and Accident Compensation Symposium (2025, 2026), Australasian Law Academics Association Conference (2025), and others. Recognized as a 'teacher that transforms,' Stewart emphasizes relational teaching and student wellbeing. He is accepting PhD students.
