Bronwyn Hughes is a Finance Associate within the Financial Services Division at the University of Otago. She provides vital financial administration and support to multiple departments across the university's Dunedin campus, specifically the Departments of Botany, Food Science, and Zoology, as well as the School of Physical Education, Sport and Exercise Sciences. These departments operate under the Divisions of Sciences and Health Sciences, advancing research and education in areas such as biological sciences, nutrition science, exercise physiology, and zoology. Bronwyn's responsibilities include managing financial operations, which underpin the teaching, research, and outreach efforts of these units. She is included on the official "Our People" page of the Department of Food Science.
Bronwyn Hughes has earned recognition for her exemplary service. In 2018, she received the Excellence in Research Support award in the Department of Preventive and Social Medicine through the University of Otago Health Research Excellence Awards, acknowledging her contributions to research facilitation in the Dunedin School of Medicine. In 2023, she contributed to the Department of Botany team that won the Award for Sustainable Practice by Staff (Team) at the University Staff Excellence Awards. The team, consisting of Professor David Orlovich, Associate Professor Paul Guy, Chelsea Kerr, Linn Hoffmann, Katherine van der Vliet, Pamela Wehi, and Bronwyn Hughes, executed initiatives like growing food in gardens for staff and students, composting food waste, donating to local food banks, creating sustainability education modules, adding a green roof for better energy efficiency, using a hybrid vehicle to cut emissions, running a 'Free Table' for item exchange, planting trees for carbon offset, supporting electric vehicles, joining climate action efforts, and building a covered bike park. These actions supported United Nations Sustainable Development Goals including no poverty, zero hunger, good health and well-being, quality education, affordable and clean energy, responsible consumption and production, and climate action.
Bronwyn Hughes participates in university health and wellness activities, including the Sport Otago TBI Health Tri Challenge for the School of Physical Education, Sport and Exercise Sciences and promoting bike commuting in the Aotearoa Bike Challenge.
