Cameron McTernan is a lecturer in the School of Communication, Media and Journalism at Adelaide University, within the College of Creative Arts, Design and Humanities. He specializes in social media, political communication, and media industries as a researcher and educator. McTernan holds a Master of Arts (Research) from the University of Sydney (2020-2022), a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) from the University of South Australia (2011), and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of South Australia (2008-2010). He previously served as a lecturer at the University of South Australia from 2015 to 2025. His research interests encompass communication and media studies, internet, digital and social media, media industry studies, political science, media diversity and pluralism in Australia, political communication, and social media and streaming services.
Key publications include the co-authored book Social Media in Society (Palgrave Macmillan, 2024) with Julia Hutchinson and Ferry Suwana. Recent articles feature Australia's television streaming market and the battle over prominence (International Communication Gazette, 2025, with Stephanie Fitzgerald), How do platforms matter? Media power, platform power and the digital domination of Australian media (International Communication Gazette, 2025, with Terry Flew), Australian news diversity on Facebook: An empirical study using engagement metrics and concentration analysis (Media International Australia, 2025), and Politics of the Gut: Comparative content analysis of Australian political Facebook posts using authenticity and populist frameworks (Communication Research and Practice, 2024). He has contributed to Global Media and Internet Concentration Project reports, including Media and Internet Concentration in Australia, 2019-2022 (2024, with Terry Flew, Stephanie Fitzgerald, and Roslyn Nicholls) and Communications, media and internet concentration in Aotearoa New Zealand, 2019-22 (2025, with Paul Thompson). In recognition of his teaching, McTernan received a Citation for Outstanding Contribution to Digital Learning from the University of South Australia in 2017, accompanied by a AUD 1500 award. Currently, he is an Executive Committee member of the Australian and Aotearoa-New Zealand Communication Association and a researcher for the project's Australian and Aotearoa-New Zealand teams. He teaches courses such as Research Methods in Media and Communication, Creating Content for Media, and Social Media Audiences and Algorithmic Cultures, and is eligible to co-supervise postgraduate students.
