Professor Catherine Granger, FACP, PhD, BPhysio(Hons), GCUT, serves as Professor of Physiotherapy in the Department of Physiotherapy at the Melbourne School of Health Sciences, University of Melbourne, within the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences. She earned her Bachelor of Physiotherapy with Honours in 2005, PhD in 2013 focusing on physiotherapy and exercise for lung cancer patients funded by a Physiotherapy Research Foundation grant, and Graduate Certificate in University Teaching in 2018, all from the University of Melbourne. Recognized as an internationally renowned cardiorespiratory physiotherapist and clinician scientist, she holds additional key appointments as Director of Graduate Research in the School of Health Sciences and Head of Physiotherapy Research at The Royal Melbourne Hospital. Granger contributes to education through teaching in the Doctor of Physiotherapy program and has supervised multiple graduate research students to completion.
Her academic interests and research specializations encompass exercise oncology, acute cardiorespiratory physiotherapy, physical activity behavior in cancer patients, and implementation of exercise guidelines in clinical oncology settings, with a particular emphasis on lung cancer and blood cancers rehabilitation. Key publications include 'Physiotherapy management of lung cancer' (Journal of Physiotherapy, 2016), 'Physiotherapy management of blood cancers' (2023), 'Home-Based Exercise and Self-Management After Lung Cancer Surgery: A Randomized Clinical Trial' (JAMA Network Open, 2024), and 'Low physical activity levels and functional decline in individuals with lung cancer' (Lung Cancer, 2013). Granger's impactful work has garnered major awards and honors, such as the University of Melbourne's Award for Excellence in Graduate Researcher Supervision (2024), the institution's highest honor in graduate research supervision; Fellowship of the Australian College of Physiotherapists (FACP, 2020); and one of the inaugural Dame Kate Campbell Fellowships from the University of Melbourne (2019). Her leadership and research continue to shape evidence-based practices enhancing survivorship and functional outcomes for cancer patients.
