Professor Cathy Stinear is a full professor at the University of Auckland. She completed a degree in physiology and a PhD in Movement Neuroscience at the University of Auckland in 2004, with her thesis examining motor cortex inhibition in focal hand dystonia. Following her doctorate, she worked for four years as a post-doctoral fellow before joining the faculty of the University of Auckland, where she rose to the rank of full professor in 2019.
Professor Stinear serves as Director of the Clinical Neuroscience Laboratory in the Department of Medicine within the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences. Her research specialisation focuses on predicting and promoting recovery after stroke, and she conducts clinical research within the Auckland District Health Board’s Stroke Unit. She is the Programme Director for the Post-graduate Diploma in Stroke Care and supervises honours, masters, and doctoral students. In 2021, she was appointed Chair of the Neurological Foundation of New Zealand, becoming the first woman to hold that position. She has also served as deputy head of the Department of Medicine and as the University’s Pro Vice-Chancellor Equity.
