Chaiporn Vithessonthi is a Professor of Finance in the Malaysia School of Business at Monash University. His academic background includes a Doktor der Wirtschaftswissenschaften (Dr.oec., equivalent to Ph.D. in Economics) from Universität St. Gallen awarded on 4 April 2005, a Lizentiat der Wirtschaftswissenschaften and Master of Science in International Management from the same university on 20 October 2003, and a Master of Arts in Economics from Western Illinois University on 6 May 2000.
Prior to his current role at Monash University, Vithessonthi served as Professor of Finance at Sunway Business School, Sunway University from 2017 to 2023, during which he also acted as Associate Dean for Postgraduate and Research. He previously held positions at Khon Kaen University as Acting Associate Dean for Administration and International Relations in the Faculty of Economics and Associate Dean for International Relations in the Faculty of Management Science. Earlier in his career, he was a Senior Lecturer in Finance at the School of Business, University of Otago, New Zealand.
Vithessonthi's research specializations encompass asset pricing, corporate finance, financial economics, financial intermediation, and international finance, with particular focus on the implications of corporate internationalization, effects of monetary policy on financial markets, financial institutions and firms, determinants of bank risk, and implications of bank systemic risk for firms' behaviors. His scholarly output from 2011 to 2024 includes publications in prominent journals such as Global Finance Journal, Journal of Multinational Financial Management, and International Review of Economics and Finance. Key works are 'Foreign investments and firm risk: evidence from Germany' with Napaporn Likitwongkajon (Global Finance Journal, 2024), 'Linear versus non-linear modelling: a systemic analysis with empirical data on credit and investment' (Systems Research and Behavioral Science, 2024), 'Financial openness and financial market development' with Jittima Tongurai (Journal of Multinational Financial Management, 2023), 'Internationalization and firm performance' with Napaporn Likitwongkajon (Global Finance Journal, 2023), and 'The consequences of bank loan growth: evidence from Asia' (International Review of Economics and Finance, 2023). His research has accumulated 2,853 citations with an h-index of 25 according to Google Scholar. Vithessonthi accepts PhD students in bank risk-taking, macro-finance, and international finance, and serves on the programme committees for the FMA European Conferences in 2025 and 2026. He volunteers in medical missions for Operation Smile since 2012 and the Pediatric Cardiac Surgery Foundation.
