Charles A. Enke, MD, FASTRO, FACR, serves as Chairman and Professor in the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC), holding the Bill Bures & Jerry Pabst Chair in Radiation Oncology. He earned his medical degree from the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine in 1985, completed a transitional internship at the Medical College of Wisconsin in 1986, and finished his residency in radiation oncology at the Medical College of Wisconsin in 1989. Prior to his recruitment to UNMC, Dr. Enke maintained a private practice in radiation oncology while serving as an assistant clinical professor with courtesy faculty appointment. He joined the UNMC faculty, was promoted to full professor in 2000, and assumed the role of department chair in 1998, having previously served as medical director of radiation oncology at Clarkson Hospital.
Under Dr. Enke's steadfast leadership, the Department of Radiation Oncology has undergone profound transformations across its academic, research, educational, and clinical missions, evolving into a powerhouse with 69 faculty and staff members as of recent profiles. He has championed the expansion of the research enterprise, leading to hundreds of peer-reviewed publications from the department, including 114 directly authored or co-authored by Dr. Enke, spanning clinical trials, bench research, and advancements in radiation techniques. His academic interests and clinical expertise encompass prostate cancer, bone marrow transplantation and Hodgkin's lymphoma, cutaneous T-cell lymphoma such as mycosis fungoides, stereotactic radiosurgery, intraoperative radiotherapy, breast cancer, genitourinary cancers including bladder and testicular cancers, and lymphomas. Dr. Enke specializes in sophisticated modalities like stereotactic body radiotherapy, total body irradiation, and intraoperative radiotherapy, delivering care at the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center and Radiation Oncology at Village Pointe Health Center. He has been honored as a Fellow of the American Society for Radiation Oncology (FASTRO designation received in 2021) and the American College of Radiology (FACR), recognizing his exceptional contributions to cancer research, education, patient care, and service to the field. Active in professional societies such as the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology, American Society of Clinical Oncology, and Radiological Society of North America, Dr. Enke continues to mentor faculty, advocate for radiation oncology's mission, and drive innovations in proton therapy and multidisciplinary oncology clinics.
