Cheryl Hug-English, M.D., MPH, is a Professor in Family and Community Medicine at the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine and Medical Director of the Student Health Center, a role she has held since 1994. She currently serves as Faculty Senate Chair-Elect, with her term expiring in 2026. A 1982 graduate of the University of Nevada School of Medicine, she earned a Master of Public Health from the University of California, Los Angeles. Hug-English has a distinguished career in medical education, student health services, and administrative leadership. In 2010, she was appointed Interim Dean of the University of Nevada School of Medicine, effective August 30, following Ole Thienhaus, M.D. Her prior positions at the School of Medicine include chair of admissions, assistant dean and associate dean of admissions and student affairs, and service on the Integrated Clinical Services Board and Student Development Committee. She has also served as president of the School of Medicine Alumni Association and as past president of the Nevada State Board of Medical Examiners.
Hug-English's contributions have been recognized with several honors, including the School of Medicine Alumnus of the Year in 2008, the Faculty Senate Award for Outstanding Service in 2018 alongside David Sanders, the Foundation Outstanding Committee Service Award for 2017-18, and the Distinguished Service Award at the 2022 Honor the Best ceremony. Her research includes co-authorship of the 2016 paper 'Five-Year Experience with Screening Electrocardiograms in National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I Athletes,' published in Clinical Journal of Sport Medicine, evaluating ECG screening protocols in athletes. As Medical Director, she has provided critical guidance on public health matters, such as distinguishing quarantine from isolation and assessing coronavirus risks during the COVID-19 pandemic, and has welcomed generations of students to campus. Through her extensive committee involvement, Faculty Senate leadership, and dedication to campus health, Hug-English has significantly influenced medical training and community well-being at the University of Nevada, Reno.
