Chihiro Sato is a Professor at the Institute for Glyco-core Research and the Graduate School of Bioagricultural Sciences at Nagoya University. She earned her PhD in 1997, along with a Master of Science in 1994 and a Bachelor of Science in 1992, all from the University of Tokyo in the Department of Biophysics and Biochemistry. Her research focuses on glycobiology, with particular emphasis on the structure and function of sialic acid, polysialic acid, and related acidic sugars in contexts such as neurons, brain function, gametic cells, and mental disorders including schizophrenia, autism, and bipolar disorder.
Sato joined Nagoya University in 2001 and advanced through roles including Assistant Professor and Associate Professor at the Bioscience and Biotechnology Center before becoming Professor in 2019. She has held leadership positions such as Director of the Integrated Glyco-Biomedical Research Center since 2021. Her contributions include numerous peer-reviewed papers on modified sialic acids and polysialic acid quantification methods, as well as awards such as the Japan Society for Carbohydrate Research Encouragement Award in 2003 and the First Japan Society for Bioscience, Biotechnology, and Agrochemistry Award for Women Researchers in 2017. She serves on editorial and committee roles in professional societies including the Japanese Biochemical Society and the Japanese Society of Carbohydrate Research.
