About Chin-Hao

Chin-Hao Huang is Associate Professor of Political Science and co-Director of the Centre on Asia and Globalisation at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, National University of Singapore. His research and teaching focus on the intersection of international politics and regional security in Asia, with an empirical emphasis on China, Southeast Asia, and U.S.-China relations. Huang examines patterns of cooperation and conflict in historical and contemporary Asia and how countries develop norms, consensus, and institutional mechanisms to achieve security. He has published three books: Power and Restraint in China’s Rise (Columbia University Press, 2022), which received an honorable mention for the T.V. Paul Best Book in Global International Relations; State Formation through Emulation: The East Asian Model (Cambridge University Press, 2022); and Identity in the Shadow of a Giant: How the Rise of China is Changing Taiwan (Bristol University Press, 2021). His articles appear in journals including International Organization, Perspectives on Politics, Contemporary Security Policy, Foreign Policy Analysis, The China Quarterly, and Asian Survey. Huang serves as Executive Editor for Asia Security and on the editorial boards of Political Science Quarterly and Contemporary Security Policy. His work has been featured in outlets such as Agence France-Presse, CNBC Asia, TIME, Bloomberg, BBC, and Financial Times. He is recognized as one of the top 30 global voices on Project Syndicate’s Forward Thinkers list.

Raised in Bangkok, Thailand, Huang graduated from the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University and earned his Ph.D. from the University of Southern California. He received the American Political Science Association’s Foreign Policy Section Best Paper Award in 2014 and the Lee Kong Chian NUS-Stanford University Distinguished Fellowship on Contemporary Southeast Asia in 2018-2019. Prior to joining NUS, he was a researcher at the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute and worked with the Freeman Chair in China Studies at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. Huang has testified on China’s foreign affairs before the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission and advises foundations, governments, and companies on strategies in Asia. He previously held positions at Yale-NUS College.
