Professor Chris McDermott is Professor of Translational Neurology in the School of Medicine and Population Health at the University of Sheffield and an Honorary Consultant Neurologist at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. He graduated with an MBChB from the University of Leeds in 1994 and completed general medical and specialist neurology training in Leeds. He undertook a clinical research training fellowship at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne before moving to the University of Sheffield in 2000, where he completed a Wellcome Trust Research Training PhD Fellowship and specialist training in neurology, becoming a Consultant Neurologist in 2006.
Professor McDermott’s research focuses on motor neuron disease, including the design and conduct of clinical trials, collaboration with pharmaceutical companies on Phase 1–3 studies, and the development of evidence-based supportive and symptomatic care. He serves as an NIHR Research Professor and has held positions including Head of Department and Academic Director for Neuroscience at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. He is Co-Director of the Sheffield MND Care and Research Centre. His qualifications include MBChB, FRCP, and PhD.
