Dr. Chris Trethewy serves as Conjoint Associate Professor in the School of Medicine and Public Health, College of Health, Medicine and Wellbeing, at the University of Newcastle. He possesses qualifications including a BSc (Medical), MBBS (Hons), and is a Fellow of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (FACEM), which he completed in 2000. With more than 20 years of specialist experience in critical care as a Senior Staff Specialist Emergency Physician at Gosford Hospital, Trethewy also holds the position of District Director of Emergency Services for the Central Coast Local Health District in New South Wales. He leads Emergency Department Research for the district and maintains active clinical practice in high-risk emergency settings.
Trethewy has contributed extensively to emergency medicine through research, education, and leadership. His peer-reviewed publications include 'Effectiveness of cricoid pressure in preventing gastric aspiration during rapid sequence intubation in the emergency department: a pilot study' (2012), 'Lack of effect on blood alcohol level of swabbing venepuncture sites with 70% isopropyl alcohol' (2010, co-authored as Christopher Trethewy, BSc (Medical), MBBS (Hons), FACEM), 'Current use of Australian snake antivenoms and frequency of immediate-type hypersensitivity reactions' (2008), 'Factor deficiencies in venom-induced consumption coagulopathy' (2010), and 'A comparison of two citrate anticoagulation regimens for continuous renal replacement therapy' (2005). Additional works cover septic shock management, such as involvement in the Australasian COVID-19 Trial (ASCOT) (2020), and portrayals of emergency medicine in Australian media. As a senior college examiner for ACEM, he plays a key role in specialist training and assessment. He previously chaired the NSW Faculty of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine, advocating on issues like methamphetamine management in emergency departments and alcohol harm reduction. Trethewy has participated in international emergency medicine initiatives through ACEM's IEMSIG and delivers plenary presentations and workshops at conferences such as Evidence Review on topics including elderly head injury and oxygen therapy in emergency care. His multidisciplinary collaborations enhance research and training in emergency medicine.
