Great Professor!
Dr Chris Tucker is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Architecture and Built Environment at the University of Newcastle, part of the College of Engineering, Science and Environment. He previously served as Head of Discipline (Architecture) from 2016 to 2019 and has been the principal and director of herd architects since 1996. His academic qualifications include a Doctor of Philosophy (2017) from the University of Newcastle, titled 'Urban Vague and the Wanderer', a theoretical, critical, and practice-based study of the architecture of the street; a Master of Philosophy (2010) on developing computational image segmentation techniques for the analysis of visual properties of dwelling facades within a streetscape; a Bachelor of Architecture (Honours); and a Bachelor of Science (Architecture), both from the University of Newcastle. Tucker's buildings and designs have received regional, state, and international prizes for architecture, with exhibitions and publications locally and internationally. He has secured over $600,000 in research funding and maintains a practice integrating architecture with research.
Tucker's research specializations encompass the architecture of the street, the nearly-urban ring within cities, the urban vague of contemporary urban planning and public space, architecture as research, and project-based research, with interests in social justice and the occupation of public space. He runs architectural studios in the Town Camps of Alice Springs since 2017 and in Tokyo since 2019, collaborating with Indigenous communities on public construction projects funded by federal and Northern Territory governments. Key publications include the books 'Guide to Housing and Infrastructure Standards in Town Camps' (2024, co-authored), 'Resilience and Sustainability in Architecture and Urban Planning: Policies, Practices, Strategies and Visions' (2023), and 'Residue: Architecture as a Condition of Loss' (2007); journal articles such as 'Mapping Resilience in the Town Camps of Mparntwe' (2022) and 'Integrating Indigenous, Western and inclusive pedagogies for work-integrated learning partnerships in architecture and design disciplines' (2022); and chapters on characteristic visual complexity using fractal dimensions in the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright and Le Corbusier (2015, 2008). Notable awards comprise the 2021 Work Integrated Learning Staff Member of the Year Award (University of Newcastle), 2022 Innovation and Excellence Award (Australian Collaborative Education Network), 2010 Pro Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Research Creative Works (University of Newcastle), and the 2006 Central Glass International Architectural Design Competition prize. In teaching, Tucker has coordinated architecture studios across all five years of the program and served as Master of Architecture Program Convenor.
