About Christina

Professor Christina Lim is a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Melbourne, Australia, within the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology. She serves as Associate Dean (Research) for the faculty. Lim received her B.E. degree with first class honors and Ph.D. in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the University of Melbourne in 1995 and 2000, respectively. Her career trajectory includes serving as Deputy Head of Department (Academics), Director of the Photonics and Electronics Research Laboratory from 2011 to 2015, Australian Research Council (ARC) Australian Research Fellow from 2004 to 2008, and ARC Future Fellow from 2009 to 2013. She has contributed to various leadership roles, including membership on the ARC College of Experts from 2014 to 2016 and multiple positions within the IEEE Photonics Society, such as Board of Governors member from 2015 to 2017, Conference Council member, and Chairs’ Committee member.

Lim's research focuses on microwave photonics, radio-over-fiber technologies, hybrid fiber-wireless networks, optical wireless communications, free-space optics, and optical network architectures. She has led breakthroughs in integrating fiber-optic and wireless systems, including the development of an indoor optical wireless network achieving data rates 100 times faster than conventional Wi-Fi, and innovations in radio-over-fiber for enhanced network performance. With over 300 publications, her highly cited works include "Fiber-wireless networks and subsystem technologies" (2009), "Radio-over-fiber technologies for emerging wireless systems" (2015), "Evolution of radio-over-fiber technology" (2019), "5G C-RAN with optical fronthaul: An analysis from a deployment perspective" (2017), and "Analysis of optical carrier-to-sideband ratio for improving transmission performance in fiber-radio links" (2006). Her work has significant impact on future wireless communications, including 6G technologies. Lim has been recognized with election as IEEE Fellow in 2023 for contributions to hybrid fiber-wireless communications technology, Optica Fellow in 2019 for pioneering advancements in fiber-wireless technology within microwave photonics, and Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering in 2025. She holds editorial roles as Deputy Editor for the IEEE/Optica Journal of Lightwave Technology and Associate Editor for IEEE Photonics Technology Letters.
