Christina Mualia-Lima is Head of Enterprise Digital Support in the Information Technology Services Division at the University of Otago, based in Dunedin. She joined the University in March 2023 as a Senior Business Analyst and advanced to Product Manager for Student Management, where she led efforts in delivering reliable, student- and staff-focused digital solutions. Her leadership in these roles highlights her expertise in digital transformation, governance, and service delivery, drawn from prior senior positions across the Pacific region. In her current position, she oversees the Enterprise Digital Support function, emphasizing collaboration and continuous improvement to support the University community.
Mualia-Lima contributed as a team member to the University's Energy Analytics programme, a pioneering initiative employing data analytics and artificial intelligence via the Kaizen Fault Detection and Diagnostics System and CopperTree Analytics software. This programme monitors building management systems across approximately 100,000 controllers for heating, cooling, ventilation, lighting, and more, delivering real-time insights into energy consumption, anomalies, and optimization recommendations. Implemented initially in key Dunedin campus buildings including Mellor Laboratories, Faculty of Dentistry, Information Services Building, Otago Business School, William James building, St David II, and Lindo Ferguson building, it achieved a 12 to 15 percent annual reduction in energy costs, lowered emissions, minimized carbon footprint, and reduced reactive maintenance disruptions. The system integrates with room booking, audio-visual, access controls, IoT devices for air quality and water leak detection, generating reports on energy use, comfort levels, and custom data while building a knowledge database from staff resolutions. For these accomplishments, the programme secured the supreme award and Excellence in Technology Innovation Award at the Tertiary Information and Communications Technology Excellence Awards. The team included Reuben Henderson, Paul van Tuel, Shane Jenkins, Nicola Walmsley, Leah McKay, with Ria van den Berg as Project Manager. Mualia-Lima has also engaged in international university partnerships, such as the Memorandum of Understanding renewal with the National University of Samoa.
