Christine K. O’Neil, Pharm.D., BCPS, BCGP, FCCP, is a Professor of Pharmacy Practice and Director of Curriculum Development at Duquesne University’s Mylan School of Pharmacy. She completed her B.S. in Pharmacy in 1985 and Doctor of Pharmacy degree in 1988 at Duquesne University, followed by a hospital pharmacy residency at Mercy Hospital of Pittsburgh the same year. Joining the Duquesne faculty thereafter, Dr. O’Neil has held various leadership roles, including Director of the Center for Pharmacy Care from 2002 to 2010, a program dedicated to health education, screening, and wellness. She maintains a clinical practice site at St. Barnabas Health System, a continuum of care facility, and serves as the Residency Program Director for the PGY1 Long-Term Care Pharmacy Residency. Her professional practice experience since 1988 includes geriatric assessment centers, office-based physician practices, and long-term care settings.
Dr. O’Neil’s academic interests focus on clinical research examining the impact of pharmacists’ interventions in health promotion and disease prevention on health outcomes, the scholarship of teaching and learning, and evaluations of pharmacy services in long-term care. Key publications include book chapters such as “A Different Kind of Pain” in Pharmacotherapy: A Casebook (8th ed., 2011), “Adult Urinary Incontinence and Supplies” in Handbook of Nonprescription Drugs: An Interactive Approach to Self-Care (17th ed., 2012), and “Vitamin and mineral supplementation in older adults” in Pharmacotherapy Self-Assessment Program (7th ed., 2011). Peer-reviewed articles feature “Reconsideration of Key Articles Regarding Medication-Related Problems in Older Adults from 2011” (American Journal of Geriatric Pharmacotherapy, 2012), “Comparison of Active-Learning Strategies for Motivational Interviewing Skills, Knowledge, and Confidence in First-Year Pharmacy Students” (American Journal of Pharmaceutical Education, 2012), and “Adverse Effects of Analgesics Commonly Used by Older Adults With Osteoarthritis” (2012). She has received the Distinguished Alumnus Award (1994), Dean’s Award (2011), Excellence in Service School Award (2011), Fellow of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (2003), Certified Geriatric Pharmacist (2004), 2023 Outstanding Post-Graduate Educator of the Year Award from the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists, and Geriatrics Teacher of the Year Award from the Pennsylvania Geriatrics Society – Western Division. Dr. O’Neil serves on Duquesne’s Curriculum Committee, Scholarship Committee, University Core Curriculum Committee, and Interprofessional Education Collaborative; as Secretary/Treasurer of the ACCP Geriatric PRN; on the editorial board of the Journal of Pharmacy Practice; and as a reviewer for Pharmacotherapy and American Journal of Pharmaceutical Education.
