Bain's research spans perioperative genomics, quality and safety of anaesthesia, perioperative medicine, inflammatory response to surgery, health informatics, electronic medical records usability, digital health ecosystems, and data mining in healthcare. His expertise includes cardiothoracic anaesthesia and perioperative transoesophageal echocardiography. Key publications include 'Short-term forecasting of emergency inpatient flow' (2009, IEEE Transactions on Information Technology in Biomedicine, 163 citations), 'Myths of ideal hospital occupancy' (2010, Medical Journal of Australia, 89 citations), 'Lessons learned from natural disasters around digital health technologies and delivering quality healthcare' (2023, International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, 99 citations), 'Postoperative systemic inflammation after major abdominal surgery: patient-centred outcomes' (2023, Anaesthesia), 'Postoperative systemic inflammatory dysregulation and corticosteroids: a narrative review' (2023, Anaesthesia), and 'Medical and nursing clinician perspectives on the usability of the hospital electronic medical record: A qualitative analysis' (2024, Health Information Management Journal). He is a Fellow of ANZCA and credentialed by examination in perioperative transoesophageal echocardiography through the National Board of Echocardiography (USA). Bain's work is supported by an ANZCA project grant and involves collaboration with the Genomics and Systems Biology Laboratory at The Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute.
