Brings passion and energy to teaching.
Dr. Christopher Harvey is a laboratory technician in the School of Physical Education, Sport and Exercise Sciences at the University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand. He plays a vital role in supporting the school's teaching and research activities by providing technical assistance in the laboratories. His responsibilities encompass maintaining and developing equipment, ensuring compliance with health and safety protocols, and facilitating experiments related to exercise physiology, sport performance, and physical activity. As part of the dedicated technical team led by Manager Nigel Barrett, Dr. Harvey contributes to the upkeep of world-class facilities that enable high-quality education and innovative research in sport and exercise sciences. The team's efforts support undergraduate and postgraduate programs, including majors in Exercise and Sport Science, Physical Education, Activity and Health, and Sport Development and Management.
Dr. Harvey's expertise extends to applied exercise testing, as evidenced by his independent services offered through lactate.co.nz, where he specializes in exercise metabolism assessments. These include lactate threshold determinations (LT1, LT2, 2mmol), VO2max testing, efficiency and economy evaluations, substrate utilization and energetics analysis, body composition measurements via bioimpedance analysis (BIA), underwater weighing, and skinfolds, as well as environmental acclimation and heat tolerance testing. He has been acknowledged for his valuable technical input in peer-reviewed publications, such as studies on the energetic and cognitive demands of treading water and multidisciplinary comparisons of water treading techniques. His work enhances the practical application of research findings in exercise physiology and supports the academic community's pursuit of excellence in health sciences.
