Professor Christopher Hessel is a distinguished faculty member in Business & Economics at Baruch College - CUNY, specifically serving in the Bert W. Wasserman Department of Economics and Finance within the Zicklin School of Business. He holds a PhD in Finance and Economics from New York University. Hessel has dedicated his career to Baruch College, where he has taught key finance courses such as FIN 3000 Financial Management and FIN 4610. His commitment to student engagement is demonstrated through his role as a CUNYfirst Ambassador in the Economics & Finance department, assisting with academic technology initiatives. Additionally, he has been recognized in Baruch College Faculty Convocation programs in 2020 and 2021, highlighting his ongoing contributions to the academic community.
Hessel has played a pivotal role in faculty governance at Baruch College. He served as Chair of the Baruch College Faculty Senate, leading meetings from at least 2014 to 2016, participating in President's Cabinet discussions, and addressing critical issues including facilities improvements, experiential learning taskforces, and budget proposals for financial aid committees. Earlier, in 2006, he chaired the College Committee for Financial Aid, overseeing proposed budgets. His scholarly output includes significant publications in finance. Notable works encompass "Shorting Leveraged ETF Pairs," co-authored with Jouahn Nam and published in the Journal of Trading (2017), analyzing trading strategies for leveraged exchange-traded funds; "Pricing Options on Foreign Currency with a Preset Exchange Rate," with Avner Wolf in the Journal of Mathematical Finance (2012), introducing a novel option structure; "Changes in Volatility of Credit Spread and Market Efficiency During the Credit Crisis," with Jun Wang in Quantitative Finance (2010), examining credit market dynamics; "Future Economic Information Embedded in High Yield Spreads," published in The Journal of Fixed Income; and "The Relationship Between U.S. Federal Reserve Discount Rate Changes and Corporate Earnings Changes," appearing in Managerial Finance (1995), exploring monetary policy impacts. Hessel also contributed to the faculty of the Zicklin School of Business Executive MBA in Healthcare program.
