About Christopher

Christopher A. Moskaluk, M.D., Ph.D., is the Walter Reed Professor and Chair of the Department of Pathology at the University of Virginia School of Medicine, as well as Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics. He earned a B.S. in Microbiology, summa cum laude, from the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, followed by an M.D. and a Ph.D. in Microbiology and Immunology from Duke University School of Medicine from 1982 to 1990. Moskaluk completed his residency in Anatomic Pathology at the National Institutes of Health, Laboratory of Pathology, National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Maryland, from 1990 to 1993, and a fellowship in Gastrointestinal Pathology at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland, from 1993 to 1995.

Moskaluk joined the University of Virginia School of Medicine in 1996 as an Assistant Professor, rising to the rank of tenured Professor. Since 2012, he has served as Chair of the Department of Pathology, overseeing approximately 40 clinical and research faculty members, and as Medical Director of the Medical Laboratories at UVA Hospital, responsible for more than 300 technical staff providing diagnostic services. He participates in the general Surgical Pathology diagnostic service. His research specializes in the molecular pathogenesis and genomic analysis of human cancers, employing genomic and proteomic techniques to uncover the molecular basis of cancer, potential therapeutic targets, and novel biomarkers for cancer and other diseases. As Principal Investigator, he directs the NIH-funded Mid-Atlantic Division of the Cooperative Human Tissue Network, the DoD-funded Lung Cancer Biospecimen Resource Network, the UVA branch of the Oncology Research Information Exchange Network, and biorepository efforts for the Cancer Moonshot Program at UVA. He serves on the Senior Leadership Council of the UVA NCI-designated Cancer Center, Chair of the Executive Committee and Board of the Piedmont Liability Trust, and editorial boards of pathology journals. Moskaluk has authored or co-authored 196 peer-reviewed publications in journals such as Oncogene, Cancer Research, Laboratory Investigation, and American Journal of Surgical Pathology. He holds the David Harrison Distinguished Teaching Professorship and received a $3.2 million grant in 2024 to support the Cooperative Human Tissue Network.
