Throughout her tenure at the University of Otago, Nicholls has supported a range of research projects in textiles and related fields. She co-authored the publication 'Wine as Fashion: Moët & Chandon and Dom Pérignon' with Dr. Richard D. Mitchell in 2008, which examined alliances between luxury wine brands and fashion. This work was cited in subsequent discussions on fashion theory applications to wine business research. Nicholls assisted Frankie Y. Daroux with equipment for the 2010 paper 'Effect of laundering on blunt force impact damage in fabrics,' published in Forensic Science International. In 2021, she helped procure samples and equipment for Nimesh Kankariya's PhD thesis 'Textiles and compression of the lower limb.' She contributed to fibre labelling in Catherine A. Smith's 2018 study 'Consolidation of Black-dyed Māori Textile Artefacts: Evaluating the Efficacy of Sodium Alginate,' working alongside Georgia Palmer and Linda Dunn. Additionally, her support was acknowledged in the Fluoride in Schoolchildren Study (FLOSS) by C. Lo in 2018 from the Department of Human Nutrition. These contributions highlight her practical expertise and impact on academic research at the institution.
