About Clark

Clark E. Llewellyn, FAIA, serves as Professor and Director of Global Track and Global Executive Education in the School of Architecture at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, a position he has held since 2007. He previously served as Dean of the School of Architecture at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. His extensive academic career spans multiple institutions, including Montana State University from 1984 to 2007 where he is Professor Emeritus, King Faisal University in Saudi Arabia from 1983 to 1984, Oregon School of Design in Portland, Oregon from 1981 to 1983, Portland State University from 1979 to 1981, Mississippi State University from 1978 to 1979, and Washington State University from 1975 to 1978. Llewellyn earned a Master of Architecture II from the Harvard Graduate School of Design and a Bachelor of Architecture from Washington State University. In addition to his academic roles, he has operated Llewellyn Architects since 1978.

Llewellyn's approach to design and teaching centers on critiquing, guiding, and inspiring students to engage with challenging ideas, disciplines, cultures, and environments rather than relying on rote memorization or risk-averse rational thinking. His interests in design and learning have been shaped by teaching in the expansive American West at Montana State University and in the Pacific at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, transforming perceived isolation into opportunities for innovation. He has contributed to several publications, including the introduction to Korea Style by Marcia Watate (Tuttle Publications, 2006), contributions to So You Want to be an Architect by Lee Waldrup (Wiley & Co., 2006 and 2010), 'Conversation with Clark Llewellyn' in Hawaiʻi Interiors (spring 2008), a feature in Maui Magazine (March-April 2008), Korea Style in Harper’s Bazaar (February 2008), and jury comments in Arumjigi Heritage Tomorrow Competition publication (Korea, April 2010). As Director of the Global Track, he oversees international dual-degree programs and executive education initiatives.
