Claudio Labanca is a Senior Lecturer and Honours Program Director in the Department of Economics at Monash Business School, Monash University, a position he has held since 2017 following the completion of his Ph.D. in Economics from the University of California, San Diego. He holds an M.Sc. in Economics and Social Sciences (summa cum laude) from Bocconi University in 2010 and a B.A. in Financial Markets and Institutions (summa cum laude) from Bocconi University in 2007. Prior professional experience includes serving as a short-term consultant for the World Bank in 2014, research assistant at the Research Division of Confindustria in Rome in 2011, trainee in the Statistics Internship Program at the European Central Bank in Frankfurt am Main from 2010 to 2011, and trainee at the Central Planbureau in The Hague from 2009 to 2010.
Labanca's research lies at the intersection of labor economics and public economics, covering wage and productivity differentials across firms, effects of taxation on labor supply, impact of migration on local labor markets, and worker-firm interactions analyzed through advanced econometric techniques applied to matched employer-employee data. Key publications include "Preparing for export opportunities" with Danielken Molina and Marc-Andreas Muendler (Journal of International Economics, 2024), "Hours constraints and wage differentials across firms" with Dario Pozzoli (Journal of Human Resources, 2023), "Constraints on hours within the firm" with Dario Pozzoli (Journal of Labor Economics, 2022), "Are there peer effects from English learners in elementary schools? Evidence from an IV approach" with Sieuwerd Gaastra (The B.E. Journal of Economic Analysis & Policy, 2021), and "The effects of a temporary migration shock: evidence from the Arab Spring migration through Italy" (Labour Economics, 2020). He is a founding member and Principal Investigator of SoDa Labs, Research Affiliate at the IZA Institute of Labor Economics, Tax and Transfer Policy Institute, and Centre for Development Economics and Sustainability, and co-editor of Austaxpolicy. Awards include Dean’s Citations for Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning in 2019 and 2020, and Department of Economics Teaching Prizes in 2018, 2019, and 2020. He has received multiple research grants, including an Australian Research Council Discovery Project grant for 2026–2029, and has co-organized workshops such as the Australian Workshop on Public Finance and Labor Econometrics Workshop, refereed for journals including Journal of Labor Economics and Labour Economics, and delivered invited presentations at institutions like the Australian National University and University of Melbourne.
