Craig F. Garfield, MD, serves as Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Hospital-Based Medicine and Professor of Medical Social Sciences in the Division of Determinants of Health at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. He also holds an appointment as attending physician in Hospital-Based Medicine at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago. Garfield earned a BA from the University of Michigan in 1990 and an MD from Rush Medical College in 1996. He completed residency training in pediatrics at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital in 1999 and is board certified in pediatrics.
His academic appointments at Northwestern began in 2000. Garfield’s research centers on child health in the context of the family, with emphasis on social determinants of health, fatherhood, and family dynamics. He directs the Family and Child Health Innovations Program at Lurie Children’s Hospital. Garfield maintains affiliations with multiple Northwestern institutes, including the Institute for Policy Research, the Institute for Innovations in Developmental Sciences, and the Robert J. Havey, MD Institute for Global Health. He has contributed to studies examining paternal mental health, parental leave, and outcomes for families with infants in neonatal intensive care.
