Craig Tidey serves as the Senior Technical Officer in the School of Surveying at the University of Otago, part of the Division of Sciences. He earned his Bachelor of Surveying (BSurv) from the University of Otago in 2007. Since joining the School in 2019, Tidey has managed the technical department and acted as the Department Health and Safety Officer. He also holds the role of Building Warden, overseeing fire evacuations. His office is located in Room G.02b of the Ōwheo Building.
Tidey's prior career encompasses extensive experience as a hydrographic surveyor on projects throughout New Zealand and internationally. He worked as a Project Surveyor at Macraes Mine and carried out land survey work for a Dunedin-based company. In his current position, he provides high-quality instruction in practical fieldwork and data processing for land and hydrographic surveying to both undergraduate and postgraduate students. Tidey offers practical and laboratory support for key courses including SURV120 Surveying and Spatial Science, SURV201 Surveying Methods 1, SURV301 Surveying Methods 2, SURV304 Land Development Engineering 3, SURV322 Hydrographic Surveying, and SURV552 Advanced Hydrographic Surveying. He maintains field equipment, ensuring availability for teaching and research, and coordinates enquiries via Room G05 at 310 Castle Street. Tidey supports the School's research initiatives through equipment provision and technical assistance, as acknowledged in multiple theses. In 2024, he demonstrated sensitive GPS instruments for monitoring land subsidence.
