About Dani

Dr Dani Linder, a Bundjalung, Kungarakany woman from Grafton, New South Wales, is a Senior Lecturer in Law at the TC Beirne School of Law, University of Queensland. She holds a Bachelor of Laws from Griffith University, a Diploma of Legal Practice from The College of Law, a Master of Laws (coursework) from Bond University, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Law from Bond University. Her PhD thesis, titled 'The Law and Policy of Indigenous Cultural Identity and Political Participation: A Comparative Analysis between Australia, Canada, and New Zealand,' was completed during her tenure as the 2017 Kathleen Fitzpatrick Laureate Visiting Fellow in Comparative Constitutional Law at the University of Melbourne under Professor Adrienne Stone. Prior to her academic career, Dr Linder worked as a lawyer across various areas for Commonwealth and State government agencies, experiences that inform her commitment to Indigenous social justice and human rights.

Dr Linder's research interests include Indigenous self-determination and cultural identity, electoral law and policy reform, Indigenous political participation and representation, comparative constitutional law, and international human rights. She teaches Foundations of Law and Law and Indigenous Peoples. Her accolades encompass the 2024 Indigenous Legal Research Award from the Australian Legal Research Awards and the 2024 UQ Business, Economics and Law Faculty Academic Excellence Award for supporting equity, diversity, and inclusion. Key publications feature 'The Disenfranchisement of Aboriginal Women' (2024, book chapter in The Feminist Legislation Project), 'Reparations and First Nations’ Legal Rights in Australia' (2023, University of New South Wales Law Journal, with Bethany Butchers and Amy Maguire), and 'Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, law reform and the return of the states' (2022, University of Queensland Law Journal, with Harry Hobbs, Dylan Lino, and Amy Maguire). She serves on the editorial board of the Alternative Law Journal and the advisory board of the Australian Journal of Human Rights. Dr Linder has presented expert testimony to the United Nations Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, contributed to media and parliamentary discussions, and held a leadership role in the Senior Uluru Dialogue for the Uluru Statement from the Heart.
