Daniel Chaney, M.A., served as a Professor of Spanish in the Modern Languages Department within the Languages & Communication division at Columbus State Community College for 32 years, beginning in 1990 and retiring in February 2023, at which time he was awarded Professor Emeritus status by the Board of Trustees in recognition of his outstanding service. He received the Distinguished Teaching Award three times, including in 2005, and was honored as an Excellence in Education honoree by Ohio Magazine for his contributions in Modern Languages. Chaney directed study abroad trips to Mexico for more than a decade, offering students immersive opportunities to practice Spanish in real-world settings. His teaching was praised for its exceptional quality, enhanced by supplementary support materials he developed specifically for students.
As a leader and mentor, Chaney was regularly available to adjunct instructors, full-time faculty, and administrators to provide expert advice on pedagogy, curriculum development, and assessment strategies. He demonstrated a strong commitment to accessibility by supporting students registered with Accessibility Services, assisting them in developing effective study habits and preparing for transfer to universities such as Ohio State University. In recent years, Chaney embraced digital innovation by creating Open Educational Resources (OERs) for the Spanish curriculum, which saved students thousands of dollars in textbook expenses while boosting engagement and learning effectiveness. Known for his collaborative nature, he shared teaching materials freely, mediated conflicting perspectives in committee discussions with impartiality and respect, and earned widespread admiration as a gentleman and dedicated educator focused on elevating student outcomes. Department Chairperson Garry Fourman highlighted Chaney's overall contributions to the college as exceptional.
