About Daniel

Daniel Schlagwein is Professor of Digital Work and Organization in the Discipline of Business Information Systems at the University of Sydney Business School. He leads the Digital Future(s) Research Group and serves as joint Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Information Technology. A Senior Scholar of the Association for Information Systems, Schlagwein earned his PhD in Information Systems from the University of Cologne between 2008 and 2012, along with GCULT and MA degrees. His academic career includes roles at the University of Sydney since July 2016, advancing from Lecturer to Associate Professor in July 2018 and to Professor. Previously, he was Lecturer at UNSW Sydney's School of Information Systems and Technology Management from August 2011 to June 2016. Schlagwein has held visiting professorships at New York University’s Stern Business School in 2015 and 2020. He teaches digital work, digital leadership, and research methods to undergraduate, MBA, Executive MBA, and PhD students.

Schlagwein's research focuses on digital work and organizing, with particular emphasis on digital nomadism, crowdsourcing, IT-enabled new forms of working, digital strategy, philosophy of science, and qualitative research methods. Key publications include 'Crowdsourcing for a Better World: On the Relation Between IT Affordances and Donor Motivations in Charitable Crowdfunding' (2016), which received AIS Best Information Systems Publications Awards; 'Ethical Norms and Issues in Crowdsourcing Practices: A Habermasian Analysis' (2018); 'Beyond the Factory Paradigm: Digital Nomadism and the Digital Future(s) of Knowledge Work Post-COVID-19' (2020); 'Digital Nomadism as a New Part of the Visitor Economy: The Case of the “Digital Nomad Capital” Chiang Mai, Thailand' (2024); and '‘Emancipation’ in Digital Nomadism vs in the Nation-State: A Comparative Analysis of Idealtypes' (2024). His scholarship has earned over 4,699 citations on Google Scholar, placing him in the top 100 Information Systems researchers worldwide per the AIS Research Ranking. Schlagwein has received the SUPRA Research Supervisor Award 2023, ABDC Award for Innovation & Excellence in Research in the established scholarly category, AIS Early Career Award, and best paper awards. As Lead Chief Investigator, he secured an ARC Discovery Grant and an ASEAN Bualuang Fellowship.
