About Danielle

Professor Danielle Schreve is the Heather Corrie Chair in Environmental Change in the School of Geographical Sciences at the University of Bristol. She holds a BSc in Archaeology and a PhD in Palaeobiology. Her research focuses on the fossil mammal record of the Quaternary period, integrating biostratigraphy, environmental reconstruction, evolutionary change, palaeodietary analysis and human-mammal interactions. She has developed models for understanding climates and environments over the past 500,000 years based on mammalian turnover and has extended this work internationally across sites in Europe and beyond. Professor Schreve leads ongoing excavations at Gully Cave in Somerset, yielding significant fossil assemblages that inform responses to past climate change and the transition from Neanderthals to modern humans. Her work increasingly connects to modern conservation through rewilding initiatives and habitat suitability modelling, including a NERC Large Grant examining ecological flexibility in grey wolves over 250,000 years. She maintains active engagement with heritage bodies such as Historic England and Natural England, contributing to policy documents and site conservation, and collaborates across disciplines including the GeoHumanities.

Prior to her current appointment, Professor Schreve held positions including at Royal Holloway, University of London. She received the Busk Medal from the Royal Geographical Society in 2026. Her contributions extend to public engagement through media appearances, exhibitions and artist collaborations.
