Professor Darrell Evans serves as Honorary Professor in the School of Medicine and Public Health at the University of Newcastle, Australia. He obtained his Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Biological Sciences from Kingston Polytechnic, United Kingdom, and Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Aberdeen, United Kingdom, with research on cell populations in skeletal muscle development. His postdoctoral work at Cornell University, USA, explored cell movement and tissue assembly in craniofacial structures. Appointed Lecturer in Anatomy and Embryology at Cardiff University in 1997, he established a research laboratory focused on musculoskeletal tissue development and repair, supported by funding from the Wellcome Trust, BBSRC, and Livanos Trust. At Brighton and Sussex Medical School from 2003 to 2013, he advanced to Professor, holding positions as Associate Dean, Head of Anatomy, and Acting Head of the Institute of Postgraduate Medicine, while expanding research into tendon development and repair and initiating studies on anatomy pedagogy, including student communication skills and active learning methods.
In 2013, Evans became Vice-Provost (Learning and Teaching) at Monash University, spearheading education reforms through the Better Teaching, Better Learning agenda, which was a finalist for the 2017 Global Teaching Excellence Award, and developing initiatives like the Monash Education Academy, Student Futures program (award-winning), and innovative learning spaces. From 2017 to 2019, as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) at the University of Newcastle, he led the implementation of the New Education Framework, student journey mapping, and chaired numerous committees including Program Approvals and Academic Promotions. His scholarly contributions include over 70 journal articles and chapters, such as "Has pedagogy, technology, and Covid-19 killed the face-to-face lecture?" (Anatomical Sciences Education, 2022), "Assessing the Wider Outcomes of Anatomy Education" (Anatomical Sciences Education, 2021), and "The Integration and Application of Extended Reality (XR) Technologies within the General Practice Setting" (Journal of Personalized Medicine, 2023). Evans has earned fellowships from the Anatomical Society, Royal Society of Biology, Higher Education Academy, and Royal Microscopical Society, along with multiple teaching awards including the 2016 E-learning Excellence and Innovation Recognition Award. He currently serves as Associate Editor for Anatomical Sciences Education and advises on higher education initiatives.
