Professor Darren Ashcroft is Professor of Pharmacoepidemiology and holds the Foundation Chair in Pharmacoepidemiology at the University of Manchester. He graduated with a BPharm from the University of Nottingham, an MSc in Clinical Pharmacy with Distinction from Queen’s University of Belfast, and a PhD from the University of Aston. He joined the University of Manchester in 2002 as Senior Clinical Lecturer, was promoted to Reader in Medicines Usage and Safety in 2007, and appointed Foundation Professor of Pharmacoepidemiology in 2010. He is the founding Director of the Centre for Pharmacoepidemiology and Drug Safety and Director of the NIHR Greater Manchester Patient Safety Research Collaboration. His research focuses on medication safety, the quantification of risks and benefits of drug therapies, and improving the appropriateness and safety of prescribing. He has led extensive programmes of research on medication errors and adverse drug events, developed interventions such as electronic audit and feedback tools for primary care, and contributed to national efforts on medication safety through roles with the NIHR, NICE, MHRA, and the Department of Health and Social Care. He is a Fellow of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society and was appointed NIHR Senior Investigator in 2024. He serves on multiple national committees including the NICE Patient Safety Advisory Committee and the MHRA Pharmacovigilance Expert Advisory Group. With over 36,000 citations, his work has significantly influenced pharmacoepidemiology and patient safety research internationally.
