About Daryl

Dr Daryl McPhee is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Society & Design at Bond University. He holds a PhD in Biology from the University of Queensland, awarded in 1999, with a thesis focused on the biology and management of the surf zone carangid Trachinotus botla in Queensland, Australia. His research interests centre on the integration of ecological, economic and social information for problem solving in the coastal zone, including fisheries management, environmental impact assessment, port developments, desalination and coastal infrastructure. He has a long history of fisheries research and authored the book Fisheries Management in Australia, published in 2008, which is noted as the only book solely dedicated to fisheries management in Australia. He previously served as a Director of the Fisheries Research and Development Corporation. More recently, his work has focused on unprovoked shark bites and shark ecology, as well as broader issues of environmental impact in coastal areas. He supervises higher degree research students in areas such as shark ecology and shark attack mitigation, urban ecology, environmental impact assessment in the coastal zone, and fisheries and aquaculture. McPhee has contributed to numerous peer-reviewed articles, book chapters and additional books, including Environmental History and Ecology of Noosa and K’Gari Coast published in 2025. He has held roles including Associate Dean of Research at Bond University and has been involved in public engagement activities, lectures and field-based teaching programs such as Island Class, launched in 2012.
