David Allsopp, Ph.D., is Professor of Exceptional Student Education in the Department of Teaching and Learning at the University of South Florida College of Education, where he joined the faculty in 2001 as an associate professor and was promoted to full professor in 2008. He holds a Ph.D. in Special Education with a minor in Educational Leadership (1991) and an M.Ed. in Special Education-Learning Disabilities from the University of Florida, as well as a B.A. in Psychology (cum laude) from Furman University (1983). Allsopp began his career as a middle school teacher serving students with severe learning disabilities, including some with emotional disturbance, and resource room students with learning disabilities and emotional/behavioral disorders at schools in Ocala, Florida. He later served on the faculty at James Madison University from 1995 to 2001 in various roles, including assistant and associate professor of special education. At USF, he has held additional positions such as Assistant Dean for Educator Preparation and Partnerships (2016-2018), David C. Anchin Endowed Chair of Education Innovation and Director of the David C. Anchin Center (2016-2018), and coordinator roles for special education undergraduate and doctoral programs.
Allsopp's scholarship centers on effective instructional practices in mathematics for students with high-incidence disabilities, including specific learning disabilities, ADHD, social-emotional/behavioral disorders, and other struggling learners, alongside teacher education research to prepare educators for these students' needs. He is co-author of Teaching Mathematics Meaningfully: Solutions for Struggling Learners, 2nd Edition (2018), and has contributed chapters such as 'Intentionally teaching inquiry and the practitioner research conference' (2020) and 'Implementing Effective Instruction: Strategy Instruction' (2019). Notable publications include 'Algebra: Big Ideas, Barriers, and Effective Practices for Students with Disabilities' (2016). His impact is recognized through awards including the Learning Disabilities Association of America Award (2023), Sam Kirk Educator of the Year (2017), USF Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Award (2006), and Exemplary Professional Development School Achievement Award (2019). Allsopp serves on the Learning Disabilities Association of America Professional Advisory Board (2018-present), National Advisory Council for the RTI Action Network (2007-present), and various university committees.
